Jokulsarlon

Right now we have some friends from Laramie visiting here in Iceland. Me and Svenni decided to take them on a weekend trip to Iceland’s south coast. Svenni’s parents have a wonderful cabin just by Iceland’s most famous volcano, Hekla. From there we were able to take our friends to Þingvellir, Seljalandsfoss and all the way to Jökulsárlón. Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lake in the southeast of Iceland. It covers an area of about 18 km2 and is the country’s deepest lake at over 248m. Movies such as Die Another Day, Batman Begins and Tomb Raider have been filmed there and I’m not surprised, this place is breathtaking. We might have been too ambitious and the drive was a little longer than expected but I really enjoyed it anyway.Jokulsarlon

The drive is beautiful and I couldn’t stop staring out the window. Just a few kilometers before you arrive at Jökulsárlón, there is another glacier lagoon called Fjallsárlón. In my opinion it’s not as gorgeous as Jökulsárlón but there are fewer tourists which might be a big plus to some people. I didn’t really mind sharing the scenery with photo-thirsty travelers. I haven’t been to this part of the country for a few years so I’m happy we went. Next time I would love to go sailing on the lagoon and even bring forward my inner dare devil and take the polar plunge (Yes, that means jumping in a glacier lagoon). Lavender

I’m not big on camping so I loved that we could stay at the cabin. Getting out of the city and appreciating the beauty of Iceland’s nature is necessary. After a year abroad, I have never felt more Icelandic or more proud of where I come from.
